“Talibe Sunshine” is a new project for street children spearheaded by rapper, Keyti in Dakar, Senegal.
The project seeks to “highlight and publicize the plight of talibés in a concerted and streamlined manner in order to put some public pressure on the main stakeholders to rectify the current unconscionable situation and treatment of these children.”
Talibé is derived from the Arabic word for student (‘Talib’). Talibés in Sénégal are often young children moving from rural villages into the city to get an opportunity to study the Koran. Sometimes these children are exploited for their labor and face an incredible amount of hardship just trying to get by on the streets.
How will the project be carried out?

Utilizing a combination of photography, music, new media and journalism, a citywide publicity campaign will be launched and carried out for two (2) days in Dakar with the goal of:
Educating the general population about the plight of Talibés.
Humanizing and giving a voice to Talibés.
Calling the main stakeholders in the Talibe dilemma to task and indirectly pressuring them to protect talibés and discourage the current trend in street begging by children.
Creating a resource for organizations in combatting the current unsustainable Talibé situation.
