they use hip hop, WE ARE HIP HOP

my first ‘hip hop reflection’ of the day.

i’ve been thinking about the exploitation, appropriation and re-appropriation, packaging and consumption of hip hop. but as krs-one said, hip hop is not just music, it’s a lifestyle.

Others may ‘use’ hip hop but we ARE hip hop. So, ultimately, the power lies in our hands to embody and breathe life into the culture.  People define hip hop NOT institutionalized pop culture, corporations and the like…

If you’re unhappy with where hip hop is going, what are you going to do to be the change?
